readings for July 12th
When i was reading the poem, "Daystar" the first stanza caught my attention with the image of the doll slumped behind the door. I can picture in my head so many times where the house is a mess after the children have played all day and like the mother the doll is also slumped into a tired position on the floor. I felt like this poem showed the love that this mother had for her children, yet, the need that she had to be alone sometimes to. I believe that so many mothers look forward to their childrens naptime. Just so that they can catch a break. I also really liked the story "A pair of silk stockings" but the part that really caught my attention was the ending. "A man with keen eyes, who sat opposite to her, seemed to like the study of her small, pale face." I liked this so much because I feel like everyone can relate to a time when you shared a moment with someone and you felt as if they were staring at you or they were intrigued by you. Or, you have looked at someone and automatically wondered what their story was and why they are the way that they are. lastly, "why I want a wife" was one of my favorite readings. the entire work is totally sarcastic, yet, I believe I have heard my mother say it all before. Not only that, but it is true. In my household my mom does take care of all the appointments, the children, feeding everyone, etc... Although, my dad tries to help out it doesnt always work the way that my mom would hope. I believe that alot of women feel like that and I just found the whole piece very funny.

I really liked the insight you had into the story "A Pair of Silk Stockings" and the man sitting across from her. It is very true that sometimes you can meet the eye of a stranger and wonder what they see when they look at you, and if they really SEE you.
In regards to your comments on your mom doing all that stuff growing up, that must have been nice. My mom was all for child labor. That's a joke, but we were taught at an early age to do housework and chores and take care of simple things for ourselves. I think my mother's mantra is "when you're in a family you all pitch in to help, that's what being part of a family means."
As I read your post I really liked the imagery you brought up about the doll in "Daystar". I didn't catch that the first time and it kind of hit me as a representation of the tired mother.
I also liked the fact that you said your mom has acted like the author of "Why I Want a Wife", because, as I said in class, my mom has said something similar to this story before. I think its funny to see that woman think so much alike sometimes.
Also you talked about the stranger in "A Pair of Silk Stockings", and I too thought about this when I read it, because everyone has those moments where you see someone, on the street or on a bus, and you just wonder what their story is. I wonder what the man thought of the women, that intrigues me.
